James Clarke | Valuations Assistant Manager
Accounts trainee to assistant manager
My experiences at Menzies prove it is an innovative and nurturing place to work
What is your Menzies story so far?
I started with Menzies back in 2018 as an Accounts Trainee with very little prior experience. Originally part of a fantastic team in the Solent Office, which supported me throughout my ACA qualification, I moved to another great office in London where I now work in Valuations within our Transaction Services Team. During my time with the Firm, I have progressed from Trainee to Senior, and now to Assistant Manager, being given the opportunity to gain experience in Accounts & Advisory, Corporate Tax, Business Forecasting, and now Valuations. This has been a fantastic grounding at the start of my career.
My current role mostly comprises the preparation of valuations for share schemes such as the Enterprise Management Incentive scheme, as well as for other tax purposes. I also assist in the preparation of commercial valuations for a wide range of purposes such as group restructurings, and successions in ownership. This role also allows me to support the Business Forecasting Service line which we hope to grow further with the Firm recently investing in new software.
What have you learnt whilst being at Menzies?
Having worked across various departments and two different offices, I have experienced the scope of the services Menzies offers, and the wide variety of people across the Firm. Whilst my colleagues come from a number of different backgrounds and professions, the working cultures between offices and teams have always remained consistent, each placing an emphasis on collaboration and communication.
I have had the opportunity to learn from a number of these colleagues, which has enabled me to develop my technical knowledge, as well as the softer skills required to succeed.
Why do you love working at Menzies?
I love working at Menzies because I’ve actively been supported to pursue and develop interests in the areas of accountancy that I find most engaging. Innovation is actively encouraged, with the Firm always looking for ways to improve efficiency and quality without losing sight of the need for flexibility and work life balance. This allows me to pursue other hobbies and interests outside of work.
Having bought my first home, moved cities, and become a Chartered Accountant all in the last 5 years, my life looks drastically different compared to when I started. Menzies has been a continued presence throughout this time, providing me with the foundation to achieve all of this. This is something for which I will always be grateful.
