Further to the recent online changes, a few problems have been experienced regarding direct debit payments set up in respect of the first VAT Return submitted online.

We have been in contact with HM Revenue & Customs who have advised that when Direct Debit instructions are submitted online users are presented with the date their instruction becomes active. VAT Returns should therefore not be submitted before this time. The date is at least five bank days from the date of submission of your Direct Debit instruction. This ensures the system is ready to collect payment for the Return in question.

If you wish to submit your VAT Return prior to the effective date then we would recommend you pay using one of the following electronic methods:

• Internet or telephone banking
• Debit or credit card over the Internet: BillPay
• Bank Giro
• CHAPS transfer
